Check any item type →Action figure valuation spans the full spectrum from $2 loose figures to $10,000+ factory-sealed rarities. The market segments into several distinct categories: vintage (1970s-1990s Kenner, Hasbro, Mattel), modern collector (Hot Toys, Sideshow, NECA), mass-market current (Marvel Legends, Star Wars Black Series, McFarlane DC), and import (S.H. Figuarts, Figma, Mafex). Each segment has its own pricing dynamics, collector base, and platforms.
The golden rule of action figure valuation is: packaging multiplies value. A loose Star Wars figure might be worth $5-20, but the same figure sealed on its original card (MOC — Mint on Card) can command $100-2,000+. For modern collector figures, the box is essential — Hot Toys figures without their original box and packaging inserts lose 30-50% of value because collectors display them in the box or use the box for storage and resale.
Character selection drives value within any product line. In Star Wars, Boba Fett and Darth Vader figures consistently command premiums across every toy line and era. In Marvel, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Venom are the most in-demand characters. For DC, Batman variants outsell other characters by wide margins. Army builders (Stormtroopers, Hand Ninjas, AIM soldiers) have their own economy — collectors buy multiples, creating steady demand for common figures in that niche.
Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and Transformers figures dominate the secondary market. Within each franchise, iconic characters (Boba Fett, Spider-Man, Batman) command 2-5x premiums over obscure characters from the same line.
MOC (Mint on Card) or MIB (Mint in Box) commands 5-50x over loose for vintage figures. For modern collector figures, the original box with all inserts is essential. Loose complete (with all accessories) is the baseline for value.
Hot Toys 1/6 scale ($200-800), Sideshow Premium Format ($200-600), NECA ($20-60), and Marvel Legends ($10-40) each have distinct collector bases. Import figures (Figuarts, Mafex, Figma) command premiums for superior articulation and sculpting.
Convention exclusives (SDCC, NYCC), store exclusives (Target, Walgreens), and short-packed figures command premiums. Limited production runs and recalled figures are the rarest and most valuable.
Hot Toys 1/6 scale figures are the premium segment. DX-series figures with enhanced features (light-up helmets, interchangeable faces) command the highest prices. The DX07 Luke Skywalker and DX16 Darth Maul are among the most sought-after.
Carded vintage Kenner Star Wars figures span a wide range. Common characters on later card backs sell for $100-300. Early card backs (12-back, 20-back) and rare characters command $500-5,000. AFA grading is the standard for high-value pieces.
NECA produces some of the most detailed 7-inch scale figures. Discontinued Alien and Predator releases appreciate significantly — the Big Chap Alien and City Hunter Predator sell for $80-150. Current releases are $25-40.
The 26-inch Haslab-funded Sentinel was a crowdfunded exclusive that sold for $350 during the campaign. Sold-out units now command $400-700 on the secondary market. Other Haslab projects (Galactus, Robbie Reyes Ghost Rider) follow similar appreciation.
Early releases of S.H. Figuarts Dragon Ball Z figures have appreciated significantly. The original Goku, Vegeta, and Frieza releases sell for $100-300 each. Bandai's import figures are the gold standard for anime action figures.
