What the automatic overlays process
On Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and Mercari, overlays are enabled by default. The supported-site scripts read detected listing image URLs and visible listed prices, then automatically request an estimate for those cards. You can turn overlays off at any time in the extension popup.
Right-click and overlay checks first post the raw image URL to the Item Value Checker endpoint. Uploads and pasted images send image bytes. If the URL-first route cannot process an image, the extension fetches it, resizes it, and sends the resulting bytes instead. Our backend may forward image bytes to eBay's image search service to find similar active listings.
Estimate results, the 24-hour result cache, and recent or saved-item history are kept in browser storage. The extension does not request browsing-history or tabs permission, does not read login credentials, and does not collect unrelated page content. Why a browser extension?
You can already check item values at itemvaluechecker.com — open the site, upload an image, get an estimate. The extension exists because for people checking 10+ items per session — thrift flippers triaging a cart, resellers scrolling FB Marketplace, dealers at estate sales — that workflow has too much friction.
Right-click → done is one second. Switching tabs, downloading the image, re-uploading it, and waiting is 30+ seconds. Multiplied by hundreds of evaluations per week, that compounds.
The website stays the easier entry point for casual users. The extension is for the people who use the tool every day.

What does the Item Value Checker browser extension do?
It lets you check a product image without downloading it first. Right-click an image anywhere and choose "Check value with Item Value Checker," or use the automatic badges on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and Mercari. Results are directional: the range is the filtered asking-price spread from similar active eBay listings, and the point estimate is 15% below the median ask.
Is the extension free?
Yes. The core extension is free with no signup or card and includes roughly 200 value lookups per day. Item Value Checker Pro is live at $7/month after a 7-day trial for unlimited extension lookups plus the website batch workflow, saved estimates, AI listing capacity, and exports.
Does it work on Facebook Marketplace?
Yes. When marketplace overlays are enabled (the default), the extension automatically checks detected Facebook Marketplace listing cards and adds a value badge. You can turn overlays off in the popup or right-click a specific listing image instead.
How is this different from the website?
It uses the same estimate as the website. The extension just removes the friction: instead of right-clicking, saving an image, switching tabs, uploading, and waiting for results, you right-click and you are done. For people checking 10+ items per session (resellers, flippers, dealers), the time savings add up fast.
Can I use it on mobile?
Not yet — Chrome extensions only work on desktop browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera). For mobile, use the responsive web app at itemvaluechecker.com which works in any phone browser.

What permissions does the extension need?
It uses context-menu and storage permissions plus narrowly matched content scripts for Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, and Mercari. Those scripts read detected listing image URLs and visible listed prices so the default-on overlays can work. Published Chrome Web Store v0.9.4 also declares the legacy pricelens-api.vercel.app host even though its current runtime no longer calls that host directly; prepared v0.9.5 removes that unused legacy host. The extension does not request browsing-history or tabs permission, does not read login credentials, and does not collect unrelated page content. Right-click and overlay checks send an image URL to Item Value Checker first; uploads and pasted images send image bytes, as does the fallback when the URL path fails.
