Check any item type →Stamp valuation depends on rarity, condition, country of origin, and collector demand. The philatelic market is mature and well-documented, with established catalogs (Scott, Stanley Gibbons, Michel) that assign catalog values to nearly every stamp ever issued. However, catalog values are aspirational retail prices — actual selling prices on eBay are typically 10-30% of catalog value for common stamps and 40-80% for rare or sought-after issues.
Condition is graded on a scale from Superb to Poor, with centering being the primary grade determinant for unused stamps. A perfectly centered stamp with full original gum can be worth 5-20x an off-center or no-gum equivalent. For used stamps, light cancellation (a small, readable postmark) is preferred over heavy cancel that obscures the design. "Never hinged" (mint condition with undisturbed original gum) commands the highest premiums for 20th century stamps.
The stamp market has faced a long-term structural decline as younger generations show less interest in collecting. This has depressed prices for most common and mid-range stamps. However, genuine rarities — classic 19th century issues, error stamps, and rare postal history — continue to hold or appreciate in value because supply is fixed and global collector demand persists for top-tier material. The key insight is that 95% of stamp collections are worth less than the owner expects, but the remaining 5% can contain significant hidden value.
Low print runs, error stamps, and early issues from any country command premiums. The 1918 Inverted Jenny airmail is the most famous US error stamp. Classic 19th-century issues are generally more valuable than 20th-century.
Centering, gum condition (for unused), cancel quality (for used), and paper freshness determine grade. A perfectly centered stamp with original gum is worth 5-20x an off-center or damaged equivalent.
US, British Empire, and classic European stamps have the strongest markets. Topical collecting (space, animals, trains) drives demand for specific issues across many countries.
Expert certification from PSE (Philatelic Foundation) or APS (American Philatelic Society) adds value and prevents fraud for stamps worth $100+. Provenance from notable collections adds prestige.
The famous 24-cent airmail stamp with the inverted airplane. Only 100 copies exist. A single copy sold for $1.6 million in 2016. The most recognizable error stamp in the world and the pinnacle of US stamp collecting.
The first US postage stamp. Used examples with clear cancellation sell for $500-1,500. Unused examples are much rarer at $2,000-5,000+. Condition and margins vary widely. A four-margin example commands a premium.
The dollar-value Columbian stamps are classic US philately. The $5 Columbus (Scott #245) in mint condition brings $2,000-3,000. The $1 and $2 values are more affordable at $200-800 depending on condition.
The world's first adhesive postage stamp. Used examples with red Maltese Cross cancellation sell for $200-800 depending on margins and condition. Unused examples are much rarer at $3,000-15,000+.
The 1930 Graf Zeppelin issue (65¢, $1.30, $2.60) is among the most collected US airmail sets. A complete mint set sells for $2,500-5,000. Used sets bring $800-1,500. Individual values range from $200-2,000 by denomination.
