Stamp valuation depends on rarity, condition, country of origin, and collector demand. The philatelic market is mature and well-documented, with established catalogs (Scott, Stanley Gibbons, Michel) that assign catalog values to nearly every stamp ever issued. However, catalog values are aspirational retail prices — actual selling prices on eBay are typically 10-30% of catalog value for common stamps and 40-80% for rare or sought-after issues.

Condition is graded on a scale from Superb to Poor, with centering being the primary grade determinant for unused stamps. A perfectly centered stamp with full original gum can be worth 5-20x an off-center or no-gum equivalent. For used stamps, light cancellation (a small, readable postmark) is preferred over heavy cancel that obscures the design. "Never hinged" (mint condition with undisturbed original gum) commands the highest premiums for 20th century stamps.

The stamp market has faced a long-term structural decline as younger generations show less interest in collecting. This has depressed prices for most common and mid-range stamps. However, genuine rarities — classic 19th century issues, error stamps, and rare postal history — continue to hold or appreciate in value because supply is fixed and global collector demand persists for top-tier material. The key insight is that 95% of stamp collections are worth less than the owner expects, but the remaining 5% can contain significant hidden value.
